Our True Nature is Love

I recently started volunteering again at a local animal rescue and shelter El Refugio Costa Ballena in Uvita de Osa, Costa Rica. This organization helps abandoned, homeless, and injured dogs and cats in the Costa Ballena region of southern Costa Rica. My specific volunteer duties are at the animal shelter for a 3 hour shift helping with the care of the cats and dogs.

After my first volunteer shift, I had wobbly, tired legs (from walking and running dogs), dirty, sweaty clothes (and probably smelly too) from cleaning the dog kennels and playing with the animals, and a heart so full and an energy level so happy I thought I was going to burst! But, I thought to myself, “let’s see how the next shift goes,” as I attributed this happy state to my return to animal shelter work. After my next volunteer shift at the shelter, I again left with wobbly, tired legs, and probably even dirtier, sweatier, and smellier clothes (puppy dogs poop a lot! lol), but my heart felt even happier.

As a reflective and curious person, it gave me pause as to why I was having this enormous feeling of happy. Was it being around the animals again? Being part of a team that focuses on animal care? Or was it getting my 10,000 steps in before lunchtime (lol). Volunteering can make you healthier!

For some, being around cats and dogs that have been abandoned, neglected, abused, or never had a home to call their own, can be depressing and almost unbearable to think about. But, on the other hand, having the opportunity to help animals that are now rescued, safe, and no longer abused or neglected, is a reflection of hope and human goodness in a world where there is so much suffering.

Stepping into the animal shelter, I could feel the oneness, the forgiveness, and the unconditional love from the animals – their true nature. It reminds me of my own, and all human beings’, true nature and our ability to BE this oneness and unconditional love. Just seeing the change in an animal from one week to another proves love’s effects. Where a dog had been abandoned by it’s family and ill from lack of medical care and wouldn’t even allow being touched by the shelter staff because of fear and pain, to one week later the same dog falls gently asleep by your side as you pet her. A true testament of an animal’s true nature of unconditional love from the gift of human kindness.

Of course, it’s not all sloppy puppy kisses and kitty cat cuddles in animal rescue . It doesn’t take much social media scrolling these days to see the latest headline where animals are on the receiving end of a human’s pain, of a human’s ignorance and suffering. You can tell alot about a human’s heart and a community by how they treat their animals. But there are many MORE good humans out there dedicating their lives to making the world better for animals and humans alike. And yes, there are many instances (more often than not) when animals come to an animal shelter or rescue group where they need time, medical care, and patience to heal from their injuries. But, amazingly, with the right care and attention, it doesn’t take long for the animals to heal (inside and out).

Now this isn’t a plea for you to volunteer at an animal shelter or other volunteer organization, just a sharing of my recent personal experience. It’s not even a plea for you to choose to adopt a shelter or rescued animal rather than purchase one from a breeder, although I hope you do consider the former. But, if you do consider volunteering your time and talents to a local cause that touches your heart or choose to adopt rather than buy your next four-legged family member, you will have given the world a lot more happy to share. And when we as a society start focusing more on our oneness with each other, rather than our separateness (what makes us different) we will lessen the suffering in the world for all beings.  Using our voices, our actions – together, we are stronger!

You’re not alone

We are never alone. When I started writing this poem, I was reflecting on the abandonment and neglect of animals. But, when I came back to the poem, I was thinking of those in our society who are forgotten, ignored, broken. How we choose to live today is not only important to our own physical, mental, and spiritual wellbeing, but it also affects all beings around us. We are so powerful and we are so loved. We are never alone.

Will you join me in this sanctuary song?

Are we looking? Have you ever had one of those weeks where humanity and its actions (or inactions) really get you down? Whether it’s reading about the never-ending violence in the world, witnessing the continued inhumane treatment of animals, or watching the many migrants crossing through the country with the look of desperation and fear in their eyes. This world definitely shows its sadness for all to see. That is, if we are looking.

But love is here. Yet, I also read about and witness everyday the MANY amazing people and organizations who continue to fight for and give refuge to those who need it most – they are sanctuaries.

No act of kindness is too small. To be a sanctuary, your actions don’t have to be huge, just big enough to make a difference for one person, one animal, one being. Maybe today, this action is just a simple smile given to someone who other’s walk by and ignore. Or it could be an action of present awareness to your family and friends, by truly listening to them with love and support. Maybe you say no to a burger or another form of animal meat, maybe just for today. Or, you finally sign up to volunteer at the local animal shelter. There are so many small (which turn into HUGE) ways to make a difference everyday.

Will you join me in this sanctuary song?

Blessings to you❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🤍

Do you believe in angels?

Do you believe in angels?
I do
different shapes and colors
celebrating life with you

A puppy dog’s tail as it wags with joy
a hummingbird’s wings whirling by
the breeze as it blows at just the right time
for sure angels are here, definitely a sign!

When the sun rises and colors the sky
and the kitten purrs when swatting at a butterfly
When the butterfly gracefully floats by
wings open
colors abound
surely angels are in disguise
surely angels are around!

 What else could it mean?
So many gifts in our sight
I don’t think its magic
but God’s gifts in flight

On the wings of an angel
from heaven they come
to celebrate life with us
with each rising sun.
-Alexis Cress

Do you have someone or something in your life (humans, animals, nature’s sights, smells, and sounds) that when you notice them, your heart overflows with warmth, with light? Take a moment to experience these gifts today. Maybe they are angels in disguise?

Blessings to you,

Alexis

Dear Animal Rescuer

Dear animal rescuer
this message is for you

I know some days are tough
heartbreaking too
You secretly wonder if there are any
tears left to cry inside you

But, then you see the hope
and the love
return in the puppy dog’s eyes
He was alone and forgotten
barely alive
Remember, how you rescued him?
You gave him food and a safe place to be
Now look,
he is running and playing
his tail wagging
with his new family

And then you hear the loud purrs of the kitty cat
nestled next to your leg
She and her siblings
were tossed in the trash
left in a box, wet, almost dead

Remember, you rescued them too
from the garbage that day
gave them warmth and safety
a comfy place to lay

Your work makes a difference
dear animal rescuer
don’t ever think a different way

I would know
because you rescued me today.
Thank you! Xoxo Puppy

---------------------------

As someone who has worked in animal rescue, most recently in Costa Rica, I know much of the sadness, the hopelessness, that can be felt on a daily basis. When an animal is found tied up in a bag by the side of the road barely alive, or crammed into a box in the trash, or chained to a 3 foot lead left out in the sun and rain, emancipated, almost dead. These acts of neglect, of torture, can leave a heart ripped wide open feeling like there is no compassion left in the world.

But, when you see the light in the rescued puppy dog’s eyes, hear the hope in the kitty cat’s purrs, and feel the warmth of your heart as it mends and grows even bigger while tears flow from your eyes, you know it was all worth it. A life has been saved!

The animal rescuers, and those who advocate, volunteer, donate, and educate for the humane treatment of animals worldwide, you are the true heroes. Fighting for those who don’t have a voice, who are dependent on humans’ actions (or inactions) – whether domesticated animals or animals in the wild – Thank You!!! Everyday your compassion, your determination, your strength, help others wake up, give others courage to speak up, and help make change for the betterment of animals and the world.

There are so many amazing organizations in this world. But, here are some of my favorites near and far (I have many favs!): Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary, El Refugio Costa Ballena, Perra Vida, Charlie’s Angels CR, Paws, China Rescue Dogs, Humane Society International, and SPCA International.

Dear Animal Rescuers – Thank You!!!

Your Voice is Your Strength

Your voice is your strength
what you think
you become

Don't let others silence you
otherwise they have won

Choose peace over war
and love over hate

If you don't understand others
then learn to educate

We don't own this world
or its inhabitants
we are only renters in this space

We do own our actions
our words
and the consequences they create

So let your light shine

Lead with your heart everyday

Every breath
open your eyes to wisdom

And let love lead the way.

Alexis Cress Yoga and Rainbow’s Light

About Me – the start of a new beginning

EARTH -my Strength. NATURE -my Healer. LOVE -my Voice. BREATH -my Teacher

Hi, my name is Alexis Cress. I’m a poet, activist, writer, yoga and meditation instructor, vegan, and a huge lover of all animals (wild and domesticated). This blog was originally created back in 2019 to showcase the awesomeness and uniqueness of shelter cats, especially the cats in Costa Rica where I am currently living. The blog was called “Norman’s Corner” because I adopted a beautiful orange tabby cat from the animal shelter El Refugio in Costa Ballena, Costa Rica.

While the blog will continue to honor his name, our Norman will take a much needed cat nap (he is still the best cat ever and continues to encourage the adoptions of shelter cats to everyone he meets, even while lovingly annoying his canine siblings!).

Because the blog has evolved into something much bigger, I will take over the writing of the blog. But knowing my sweet, but very vocal cat, I will have guest writers share their feline and canine knowledge once in a while. The blog will now include my poetry and excerpts from my poetry book “Rainbow Light in the Cricket Sound”, animal activism writings and educational materials to share (in both English and Spanish), spotlights of animal welfare organizations (and people) who are making huge differences in the lives of animals, and other topics that are near and dear to my heart. So, please stay tuned.

Share a blog post with others if it inspires and connects with your heart, and above all, be the unique, divine self you are meant to be today and everyday! And TOGETHER we WILL ease the suffering of all beings in this world.

Life is better with a Cat – an ADULT CAT that is!

UNLESS, you want claws on your legs, claw marks on your arms, and four kitten legs crawling up your very expensive curtains! And, don’t forget about the dancing sessions kittens like to do at 3:00am in the morning on your bed! WOW-MEOW If you would prefer a feline with lots more manners and definitely more calm (and less paw prints on your ummm curtains), then an Adult Cat is what you crave.

There are so many PURRfect reasons to adopt an adult cat.

They’re not needy. Cats love their independence and privacy. You can leave them home for hours and not feel guilty about it. Kittens, on the other hand, do need a certain amount of socialization and human interaction. But, don’t confuse kitty neediness with cat kneading. Some cats will perform this quirky but common behavior. It is also called “making biscuits” where the kneading is a motion made by pushing in and out with their paws, alternating between right and left, with their claws retracted or extended. This is often accompanied with a contented purring sound, and if the paws have claws extended on your leg, maybe a human yowl will also accompany cat kneading (lol meow).

At the shelter, you will often see cats kneading each other. Here are cats Rolo and Gody.

What you see is what you get. Their personalities are pretty much set as an adult cat. When you visit them at the shelter at El Refugio Hogar Animal Costa Ballena (or your local animal shelter), you will see some cats who want to cuddle with humans right away. Other felines might actually prefer felines MORE than humans. You will also surely see felines that are very playful, while others will observe humans from a distance being more timid and reserved. But kittens are pretty much all the same. They are adorable, crazy, and funny toddlers at their kitten ages. Not until they are adults, will kittens show their true PURRsonalities.

Adult Cats are better with kids. Adult cats often have more patience and tolerance with kids (not all kids though!). Kittens, on the other paw, have less patience and tend to scratch and bite until they have learned good manners. But remember, even with adult cats it is always best to have an adult human supervising young kids with cats.

Magica will always play nice with your kids. She is available for adoption at El Refugio Costa Ballena.

Good cat karma will come to you! While every shelter cat and kitten deserve a loving home, often kittens are adopted first, leaving more and more adult cats left in the shelter. Knowing that you helped give a shelter cat a loving home and a second chance at life will definitely bring good karma into your life.

Life is definitely better with a Cat – an Adult Cat that is!

Cheers,

Norman

Why do cats always get their way? They are very purr-suasive!

Don’t forget to spay & neuter your cats & dogs.  There can be too much of a good thing!  There’s only so much catnip to go around.

FELNE FAVORITE OF THE DAY

Mickey

Mickey at El Refugio Costa Ballena is the sweetest cat ever. He is a Tuxedo Cat, which are known for their gorgeous coats. He is friendly and happy. He is often seen near the water bowls at the shelter with one paw in the dish! He is going to make a family very happy with his unconditional love and purrsonality.

The Feline Five…we have personalities too!

Do you ever wonder if us fantastic felines have personalities too? Well, as a matter of fur fact, we do! We have many different fascinating personalities, just like you!

One purrfectly awesome reason to adopt a kitty cat from El Refugio Costa Ballena animal shelter (although, there are many!!) is because the shelter is a house with 3 big open rooms where the cats roam, rest, and play freely. Because of this unique environment, the shelter volunteers are able to see each cat’s personalty in action! When you come to adopt your new feline family member, the shelter volunteers can help you find the purrfect feline for you!!

So, let me introduce you to the Feline Five personalities and some of the felines at El Refugio Costa Ballena that represent them.

Affectionate and Sociable, also called the “love mooch”. They just can’t seem to get enough of You and your attention. They love to be near their human. Mickey from El Refugio Costa Ballena is a love mooch.

Mickey at El Refugio

The Chatty Cat speaks in almost complete sentences (wow MEOW). If you love the sound of meows, this is the purrfect type of cat for you! But, rumor has it, if you talk to your cat, eventually your cat will talk back to you. Remember my recent blogs, “Whoever said Cats don’t Speak”, along with “How to talk Cat”? Please read up and soon you will be talking with your feline family member!

We’ve had quite a few “talkers” at El Refugio, like Keylor and Rocky (boy, could they talk!). And, yes, ME – I bet you are not surprised! But, Keylor, Rocky, and me have all been adopted (we are sooo happy!). Although Havy, a foxy feline at El Refugio, I’ve heard is becoming quite the “chatty cat” these days.

Havy is Heartsome!

The Movie Star is El Refugio’s Twix. He is full of sass and enjoys showing off. Give him a little attention, and he will give you a free show of fun and laughter.

Twix is a Movie Star

The Shy and Aloof Type – the Mysterious Stranger. Now, don’t let “shy” scare you away. This type of cat is great for the undemanding human who doesn’t want or expect ongoing attention from their feline. Often shy or aloof felines are independent and very sweet like Gody at El Refugio Costa Ballena.

Gody is Shy but very sweet

Lastly, we have the Leader of the Pack (although, I guess I should have started with this one – haha, I crack myself up sometimes…) With lots of spunk and independence, this type of cat loves her human, but isn’t a “lap cat”. She is fine with being near but not too close. She will give you attention, but often on her terms. In a multi-cat household, she is often the first one to the food dish and water bowl. Rica at El Refugio is definitely a “Leader of the Pack”.

Rica is sweet sass

So, there you have it – Personalities for every type. Each Feline Five personality is sure to bring you and your family a lifetime of love and gratitude.

Cheers,

Norman
